Exams Are Over — So Now’s the Time to Prepare for What Comes Next
Is it too early? Or too late! Act NOW!
Hello 👋 teachers, coaches, and educators, and parents too!
At this time of year, not just the teachers and students, but also many parents breathe a sigh of relief. The exams are done, the stress is lifting, and soon we’ll all know the results — for better or for worse.
For some parents, the results will match their children’s goals; for others, it may be a moment to reassess future plans. Whatever the outcome, it's a powerful reminder that education isn’t a straight path — it's a journey filled with detours, disappointments, and breakthroughs.
For years I watched how much pressure young people felt when results fell short of their hopes. But here’s something we all often forget: exam results DO NOT define a future. With the right mindset for learning, nearly all learners can make progress and eventually flourish — sometimes in spite of a temporary setback.
So, instead of tying their future to a grade on a piece of paper, we should be asking: How can we help them become better learners, not just for next year’s exams, but for whatever comes next?
That’s why metacognition is the answer. Metacognition simply means thinking about how we learn — reflecting on our strategies, spotting when something isn’t working, and figuring out a new approach. It’s a powerful tool because it lets students become more independent, adaptable, and motivated, whatever the curriculum throws at them.
For many, developing this ability can produce dramatic improvement in their results, sometimes in a matter of months. And the best part? It’s not about adding more pressure or more hours of revision; it’s about changing the way we facilitate learning and the way we help students learn.
So as we close this school year and look forward to the next, let’s consider this: instead of focusing on the “what”—the content to learn—why not devote a little more time to the “how”—the strategies and thought processes that empower children to learn smarter?
It’s a powerful gift we can give our students, not just for their exams, but for their future.
🧭 So let’s not just teach content. Let’s not just focus on exams year in, year out. Let’s teach learners how to truly learn - for life.
